Although electric vehicles that reduce greenhouse gas emissions attract many drivers, the lack of confidence in charging services deters others. Building a reliable network of charging stations is difficult in part because it's challenging to aggregate data from independent station operators. But now, researchers have developed an AI that can analyze user reviews of these stations, allowing it to accurately identify places where there are insufficient or out-of-service stations.

With the myriad portable devices people use every day, batteries are a ubiquitous part of every-day life. However, to dispose of batteries or recycle their materials is currently not a very environmentally friendly proposition, a problem researchers have been trying to solve. A team from the University of California (UC) San Diego has come up with a potential solution to this problem with a new process for restoring spent cathodes to a condition that is like new. The process paves the way for recycling lithium-ion batteries, which would eliminate some of the excess waste batteries create today.

Buildings account for about 40 percent of U.S. energy consumption, and are responsible for one-third of global carbon dioxide emissions. Making buildings more energy-efficient is not only a cost-saving measure, but a crucial climate change mitigation strategy. Hence the rise of “smart” buildings, which are increasingly becoming the norm around the world.Smart buildings automate systems like heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); lighting; electricity; and security.

Called Rolloe, this bicycle wheel uses the riders motion to filter outdoor pollution, cleaning the air as they cycle. The bicycle wheel uses motion and rotation to capture outdoor air pollution, including particulate matter and noxious gasses. The wheel draws in polluted air using the rider’s kinetic energy. The air is sucked into a set of reusable filters, which expel it clean back out towards the rider’s face and into the environment. At average pace, the wheel captures 1.25 m³/km. Once the filter is filled, it can be returned to Rolloe for washing and swapping for clean filters.
